Lakewood is a small school with a big heart- it is full of talented teachers and friendly staff who share a strong sense of community, purpose, and caring for their students. There are many enrichment activities and academic programs to help children succeed.
Lakewood represents Durham – in terms of diversity, inclusiveness, and welcoming all and also in the spirit of being willing to put time and effort towards improvement, helping others, and providing a place for all kids to thrive. I’m so proud to be a part of a community like this!
Lakewood truly is a community school, with strong support from families and robust partnerships with community organizations. The teachers and staff are excited to greet students every morning, and the kids leave school happy and energized from a day of learning.

Smiling faces and bumping music greet you at drop off and kids run out of the building with energy and positivity at the end of the day. Specials teachers are AMAZING and my kids always feel included in all activities. Teachers share their cell phone numbers and communicate well and they have found individualized learning pathways for both of my kids at the school. Wonderful positive behavior model, no shaming or bullying. Great school!
I love the togetherness of the staff. They make you feel welcomed and it feels like we’re all one big happy family.
We are a community school with active family engagement and shared leadership among staff. Students feel welcome and cared for at Lakewood. We celebrate our students and focus on meeting their needs.
Lakewood Elementary feels like “home.” It is very comfortable and makes me feel at ease. The love and support that our staff members have for our students exceeds outside of this building into the community.
The feeling of Lakewood when you walk in is what is so unique. It is a place that feels welcoming and loving and everyone is very friendly and inviting.
I love they way they work to build community amongst a diverse group of parents, teachers, and students. Our kids love their teachers and we get plenty of support.
